A therapy radiographer from Bolton who retired from The Christie in May after working there for 42 years was given a special send off by the Lord Mayor of Manchester.
Heather Rogers joined the specialist cancer centre in 1967 as a student, became a fully fledged radiographer in 1969 and has worked there ever since. She decided to 'hang up her boots', to spend some time travelling and re-vamping her garden.
Heather said: “Meeting the Lord Mayor was a pleasure – it felt like she came in especially to wish me well! I’ve had many wonderful years at The Christie and I am really going to miss everyone – so much so that after two months' holiday I’m coming back to work two days a week.”
Radiotherapy manager at The Christie, Pat Lawrence, said: “Heather has been a credit to our department and The Christie at large, and is well liked by staff and patients. She’s been a ‘mum’ to many of the students, so I’m thrilled she’s not leaving us completely. Her skills are second to none. I’m glad her last day was marked with a visit from a VIP.”
As well as meeting Heather, the Lord Mayor, Councillor Mavis Smitheman, had a tour of the specialist cancer centre, heard about its future developments and spoke to patients.
